LAST TIME OUT

UT Tyler went on the road to kick-off a five-game road trip last weekend and came away with a pair of results over Rogers State and East Central. A frantic start with goals from each team in the first five minutes of action gave way to a balanced 1-1 draw between UT Tyler and Rogers State on Thursday evening. The Patriots earned the result on the first of five straight non-conference road games thanks to a rock-solid defensive effort. Senior Alexia Moreira redirected a Melissa Oliveira shot 59 seconds into the contest to quickly put UT Tyler on the board 1-0. Oliveira created space after collecting a throw-in from sophomore Natalie Jones and delivered a shot into the box that redirected off Moreira and into the back of the net. The lead was short lived, however, as Rogers State found the back of the net on their first shot attempt of the night as well off the foot of Vanessa Gonzales in the fourth minute. That 1-1 tie held for the next 85 minutes of game action as neither team truly threatened the opposition on the backs of two quality defensive efforts. Both teams registered five shot on goals attempts for the contest, while UT Tyler held the advantage with 10 total shots. Second half goals from Sienna Skinlo and Brooke Mullins solidified an unbeaten weekend for UT Tyler with a 2-1 win over East Central on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead following those goals and overcame playing the majority of the match down a player after an early red card in the contest. The 70-plus minutes of soccer playing a player down seemed to finally catch up to the Patriots as East Central generated the majority of their momentum in the match in the waning minutes. An 81st minute goal from East Central's Cambori Watson cut the Patriot lead in half at 2-1, but a save from keeper Emily Clark with less than two minutes on the clock ensured the second result of the road trip for the Patriots.

WHAT COACH WEBB IS SAYING

On the team's efforts against Rogers State and Ouachita Baptist... "Rogers State is a really good team. We obviously got off to a really good start, a goal in the first minute is great, but then we didn't have the mentality to secure it. We let them back in it and they scored a goal, but then it was just a war after that. It was a tremendous game and I thought we grew tactically throughout the game. Second road game on Saturday, it was really hot, and we got a red card nine minutes into the game. So on the road, down a player for 80 minutes, in the heat I was really proud of our effort. I thought we dominated possession, we had all the stats in a favor, but at the end of the day we were a man down. So it was a weekend full of growth for us, you want to win both games so not 100 percent happy, but we grew a ton."

In the difference in mindset this year's squad has shown in some early battles this season... "I think the difference for us is that a year ago, we lose those tight games. We didn't have that mental toughness and confidence that is who we are, that we're going to win ugly. We thought that it had to be a pretty win with the way the game plan came together, but at the end of the day in this conference, ugly wins are wins. We have had to learn that and I was really proud of that mentality this weekend and it's something that we're focused on every single day. We're going into every game with the battlers spirit that we're going to take it to you and at the end of the day see what happens."

On this weekend's trips to Ouachita Baptist and Harding... "We're going to two places that are very difficult to play against two teams that are traditionally just warrior mentality teams. So we're looking forward to that battle and so excited about the battle that's ahead of us. Realistically for us we know both teams will give us trouble because they are both spectacular at home. So it will feel like it's just like getting ready for the Lone Star Conference. They both play two different styles, but we're excited about the challenge."
