Patriots Tennis Opens Season with Tyler Invite

The Patriots will take on their lone tournament of the fall this weekend as they co-host the Tyler Invite with Tyler Junior College and welcome in top tier competition.

THE 2022 SEASON

The 2022 year saw the men's program launch themselves back into major heights yet again, this time posting one of the best records in program history while rolling to an 8-0 record in LSC play and their second ever LSC Regular Season title.

At one point, the Patriots had 18 consecutive wins on their resume, including six of those coming over opponents nationally ranked by the ITA. That winning streak was upended by Cameron in the LSC Tournament Championship, but the Patriots got back to their winning ways by defeating Midwestern State in the NCAA South Central Region Tournament to book their spot in the NCAA Round of 16 for the second consecutive season.

That run came to an end in the Round of 16, as #7 seed Hawaii Pacific took down the #10 seeded Patriots by a score of 4-2 to advance and end the Patriots season.

Over on the women's side, they continued to make steps in the right direction as they battled to a 12-10 record overall and a 6-4 record in LSC play. On the year, the Patriots took down a pair of opponents associated with the ITA national rankings while qualifying for the LSC Tournament for the second consecutive season.

Eight Patriots players were selected on All-LSC teams once the dust had settled, marking a new program record in the Division II era.

SETTING THE STAGE

UT Tyler tennis will look to get their fall schedule off on the right foot as they don't have to travel far for their first competition. The Tyler Invite is set to host several top Division II teams as well as perennial junior college power Tyler Junior College and Division I foe Lamar.

The event will take place on Friday and Saturday with the men's side of the tournament taking place at Tyler Junior College and the women's side competing at Summers Tennis Center for their tournament. Dating back to 2017, this tournament has been co-hosted by the Apaches and the Patriots each fall with the lone exception of 2020.

THE ROSTERS

The women's side will see a dramatic turnover, as several players have graduated and moved on from the program. Head coach Chris Bizot and assistant Ryan Spencer were hard at work on the recruiting trail, bringing in high impact freshmen as well as a pair of bigtime transfers. Returners Allison Schwartz, Violetta Khisamova, and Kanika Sivaraman will look to lead the newcomers into a new era for the Patriots.

On the men's side, the departure of All-American Gonzalo Fernandez Gil as well as doubles power Jonas Dixon will make a dent in the program, but returning All-American Joaquin Bianchi, Egor Shestakov, and Yudai Watanabe will lead a mixed bag of key returners and key signees as the Patriots look to make it three straight trips to the NCAA Round of 16.

THE FALL SLATE

The fall slate for the Patriots will be a short one, as they will compete in just a pair of tournaments before setting their sights on the all-important spring semester. This weekend's Tyler Invite will be the lone tournament before the teams pack up and head for the ITA Regional Championships.

The women's regional will be hosted at Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas on September 21-23. The men's regional will be hosted by Lubbock Christian in Lubbock, Texas on September 28-29.

The winners of both the singles and doubles draws at each individual site will then qualify for the ITA Cup that will take place in Rome, Georgia on October 11-14.
