LAST TIME OUT
Three RBI days from both
Sam Schott and
Nicole Price helped push #6 UT Tyler to an 8-0 run-rule victory of St. Edward's on Saturday afternoon. Schott got on base on all four of her trips to the plate, adding a walk to a 3-for-3 effort that featured a run scored and three RBI, and helped close out the series sweep of St. Edward's. Price went 2-for-2 with a triple to go along with her three RBI and junior
Christin Haygood moved to 9-0 on the year in the circle with a complete game shutout in the circle. UT Tyler led 7-0 after their first two trips to the plate and then closed the books on the game and the series with an RBI single from Schott that enacted the 8-0 run-rule in the bottom of the fifth inning. The win is the seventh in a row for the Patriots and extends the program's overall record to 34-7 on the year and 25-5 in Lone Star Conference play.
#6 UT Tyler secured 6-4 and 13-0 wins over St. Edward's on Friday afternoon to kick-off a six-game homestand at Irwin Field. UT Tyler plated six two-out runs in the second inning of game one and then totaled all 13 of their second-game runs in the first three frames to provide the majority of their damage early in both outings. Graduate student
Genesis Armendariz struckout six of the eight batters she faced in game one to collect a save and then tossed a four-hit shutout in the five inning run-rule in game two. Junior
Sam Schott had multiple hits in both games of the doubleheader, scoring four times, and finished the afternoon 4-for-5 at the plate.
PATRIOTS NEWS AND NOTES
- A six-game homestand was interrupted by inclement weather in the Tyler area this week, resulting in consecutive long road trips for the Patriots for the next two series. UT Tyler's series previously scheduled at Irwin Field against St. Mary's on Tuesday and Wednesday, was rescheduled for April 23-24, setting up two of the longer road trips on the Lone Star Conference schedule for the Patriots at Western New Mexico and Texas A&M International for the final road series of the regular season.
- UT Tyler will enter that road trip in great form, winners of seven straight games, including consecutive run-rule victories over St. Edward's to close out their most recent series. The Patriots sit second in the Lone Star Conference standings with a record of 25-5, effectively two games back of West Texas A&M, who have played three more games than the Patriots and sit 30-3 in league play. The top 10 teams at season's end will qualify for the 2024 Lone Star Conference Softball Championship Tournament to be hosted by the no. 1 overall seed on May 9-11.
- The Patriots will visit a Western New Mexico club that enters the series 8-32 on the year and 5-28 in Lone Star Conference play. UT Tyler is 7-0 in the all-time series against the Mustangs and have out-scored Western New Mexico by a 31-1 margin in the last three meetings between the two programs. This weekend will mark the second trip to Silver City, N.M. for UT Tyler after claiming 14-6 and 8-1 wins back in their inaugural trip in 2021.
- The race for qualification into the NCAA Division II National Tournament will heat up as well with the season winding down. Eight teams from the South Central Region will compete in the 2024 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament. The winners of the LSC Softball Championship Tournament and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship Tournament will earn automatic bids into the eight-team field, while the remaining six teams will be selected as at-large bids. The South Central Regional Tournament will take place at the no. 1 and no. 2 seed's host sites on May 9-11, with the two winners of each side of the bracket advancing to meet in a best-of-three series on May 15-16 in the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals.
- UT Tyler is 6-3 this year against teams associated with the NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.
- The University of Texas at Tyler softball team remained no. 6 for the third week in a row in the latest 2024 NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll as announced by the organization on Tuesday morning. The Patriots received 320 total votes to come in at no. 6 in what was an unchanged top eight in this week's poll. West Texas A&M stayed as the unanimous no. 1 with all 16 first-place votes, followed by North Georgia, Tampa, Rogers State and Indianapolis in the top five.
- UT Tyler junior
Sam Schott garnered Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week honors after powering the Patriots to a series sweep over St. Edward's. Schott went 7-for-8 between the three games, helping guide UT Tyler to 6-4, 13-0 and 8-0 victories over the Hilltoppers. The Longview, Texas native is the fourth representative from UT Tyler to earn a Player of the Week distinction from the Lone Star Conference, joining
Crimson Bryant,
Cassidi Mullen and
JT Smith who earned Player of the Week nods earlier this season. From her leadoff spot, Schott drove in five runs and scored five times, batting at an .875 clip and posting a .909 on-base percentage for the series. Schott opened with a 2-for-3 outing in game one and 2-for-2 in game two, then capped her weekend going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a stolen base.
- A deep pitching staff continues to serve as the strength of the Patriots in 2024. UT Tyler ranks 12th in all of Division II softball and leads the Lone Star Conference with a 1.76 staff ERA. What makes that metric even more impressive is that the Patriots have used four different arms with regularity, as four different Patriots have tossed 40-plus innings so far this season. Three of those individuals have produced sub 2.00 ERA, with the lone exception
Genesis Armendariz having thrown the most innings this season with 104.2. Armendariz sports a 2.01 ERA and had arguably one of her better weekends last week against St. Edward's.
Christin Haygood (1.38),
Kaylee Davis (1.66) and
Crimson Bryant (1.76) all rank within the top five in ERA in the LSC season.
- The Patriot offense has found consistency over the last few weeks and ranks second in the league with a team average of .327. Schott has been the hot bat as of late, entering the week on a seven-game hitting streak and has posted multi-hit effort in six out of those seven games. Schott ranks third in the LSC with 46 runs scored on the year and leads the team with seven homers.
Courtney Plocheck and
Cassidi Mullen each lead the team with a .396 average on the year, fifth best in the Lone Star Conference.
- UT Tyler ranks ninth nationally with a .433 on-base percentage having drawn the 10th most walks (160) and produced the 33rd most hits (351) across Division II softball this season.
- The Patriot defense has been exceptional as well, ranking 14th in the country with a .975 fielding percentage, and has turned the fourth most double plays (20) nationally this year.
- UT Tyler softball is in the midst of the 20th year of the program with an all-time record of 790-150 (.840) dating back to the inaugural 2005 campaign. The Patriots are 195-32 (.865) in four seasons of Division II play and have gone 122-17 (.889) in Lone Star Conference games over that timeframe. UT Tyler has finished as Division II National Semifinalists in both seasons of Division II postseason eligibility in 2022 and 2023.
- The Patriots have won 50-plus games in two seasons after going 50-5 back in 2015 and have not registered double-digit losses in a season in 12 straight years.
- UT Tyler has made 12 appearances in an NCAA National Championship Tournament between the Division II and III levels, and have advanced to the NCAA World Series in nine of those 12 trips.
- Head coach
Mike Reed and his staff garnered ATEC/NFCA South Central Regional Coaching Staff of the Year honors for a third consecutive season. The honors come in each of the first three complete seasons at the NCAA Division II level. Coach Reed and his staff have been named regional staff of the year by the NFCA on nine different occasions (2023, 2022, 2021, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2009) dating back to the program's inaugural season in 2005.
- Head coach
Mike Reed is in his 20th season at the helm of the program after previously serving for three seasons as the head coach at East Texas Baptist before taking over at UT Tyler. Reed ranks fourth among all NCAA divisions in career winning percentage (.831), posting a 895-181 career mark through 22 career seasons. He owns the second-highest all-time win percentage among Division III coaches, coaching 18 of his 20 seasons at the Division III level, and is a nine-time American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year, and seven-time NFCA Regional Coach of the Year. He has helped develop 36 All-Americans, 103 all-region and 162 all-conference selections and has led the UT Tyler program to the NCAA World Series in nine of the 13 years since the Patriots became postseason eligible in Division III.
