#1 Patriots to Take On Dustdevils, Javelinas

The Patriots wrap up an eight game homestand this weekend with doubleheaders against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

LAST TIME OUT
 
Last weekend the Patriots put together a pair of sweeps over Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico. The Patriots outscored their opponents 34-3 over the three games, and had three total shutouts in four games. Those four games also included a 12-0 run rule win and an 8-0 run rule win over the weekend.
 
NATIONAL POLL
 
The Patriots remain the #1 team in the NFCA Division II Coaches Poll Top 25 this week, marking the sixth straight poll the Patriots have owned the top spot this season. The Patriots are joined in the top five by #2 Tampa, #3 West Texas A&M, #4 Angelo State, and #5 Auburn Montgomery. #18 Oklahoma Christian also joins the list of LSC teams represented in the polls this week.
 
PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS
  • UT Tyler softball begins the 21st year of the program with an all-time record of 819-151 (.844) dating back to the inaugural 2005 campaign. The Patriots are 224-33 (.869) in five seasons of Division II play and have gone 134-17 (.887) in Lone Star Conference games over that timeframe prior to the 2025 season.
  • The Patriots have won 50-plus games in the last two seasons after going 50-5 back in 2015 and have not registered double-digit losses in a season in 13 straight years. 
  • UT Tyler has made 13 appearances in an NCAA National Championship Tournament between the Division II and III levels, and have advanced to the NCAA World Series in 10 of those 13 trips.
  • Head coach Mike Reed and his staff garnered ATEC/NFCA South Central Regional Coaching Staff of the Year honors for a fourth consecutive season. The honors come in each of the first four complete seasons at the NCAA Division II level. Coach Reed and his staff have been named regional staff of the year by the NFCA on 10 different occasions (2024,2023, 2022, 2021, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2009) dating back to the program's inaugural season in 2005. 
  • UT Tyler softball is 363-45 (.889) all-time on their home field at Irwin Field prior to the 2025 season, and completed the 2024 season with a 26-2 mark at their home ballpark. The Patriots are 102-8 (.927) in home Lone Star Conference games and have never lost more than six games at home in a season.
  • JT SmithSam SchottTaryn BarneyAngelique RangelHailey Fannin, and Kaylee Davis mark a group of returners with national championship experience as they will look to lead a host of newcomers back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year.
  • Head coach Mike Reed returns for his 21st season at the helm of the program after previously serving for three seasons as the head coach at East Texas Baptist before taking over at UT Tyler. Reed is 1st among all NCAA divisions in career winning percentage (.837), posting a 942-184 career mark in 24 career seasons. He owns the second-highest all-time win percentage among Division III coaches, coaching 18 of his 23 seasons at the Division III level, and is a nine-time American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year, and eight-time NFCA Regional Coach of the Year. He has helped develop 37 All-Americans, 112 all-region and 177 all-conference selections.
  • The Patriots have been nothing short of dominant through their first 21 games. They have allowed more than three runs in a game just once while scoring at least three runs in all but two games. They are ranked top 10 in Division II in shutouts (1st), hit by pitches (2nd), triples (3rd), sacrifice bunts (3rd), on-base percentage (4th), slugging percentage (5th), total runs (6th), doubles (6th), RBI (6th), WHIP (6th), and home runs (8th).
  • JT Smith leads the country in runs scored and is second in triples, Primrose Aholelei is seventh in wins, and she is tied with Cera Blanchard for fourth in shutouts.
 
DUSTDEVILS NOTES AND TRENDS
  • Texas A&M International is 14-13 on the year and 6-8 in LSC play. They are coming off a two game losing streak as they were swept by West Texas A&M on Sunday.
  • Kennedy Griego is leading the offense. She is hitting .400 with three doubles and one home run while driving home nine and scoring eight runs. She is slugging .471 and is getting on base at a .474 clip.
  • In the circle, Zakayia Fredrick has a 3.92 ERA and is 3-5 on the year. She has thrown 60.2 innings while striking out 26 and issuing just 10 walks. Opponents are hitting .282 off her.
  • Head coach Scott Libby leads the program and is in his 17th season, all with the Dustdevils. He has compiled a record of 353-511 in his career.
 
JAVELINAS NOTES AND TRENDS
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville is 15-12 on the year and 10-6 in LSC play. They are coming off a sweep of Midwestern State this past Sunday and have won two in a row.
  • Lindsey Evans is hitting a blistering .494 with nine doubles, two triples, and five homers. She has 21 RBI to go with 28 runs scored and is getting on base at a .598 clip.
  • In the circle, Kristina Nash leads the way with a 3.33 ERA. She has a record of 4-4 with 46 innings pitched. She has struck out 25 batters to 33 walks and opponents are hitting .270 against her.
  • Orlando Salinas is the head coach of the program and is in his third season. He has compiled a record of 69-60 in those three seasons. Previously, he served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
