The Patriots head out on the road this week for Lone Star Conference showdowns against No. 18 St. Edward’s and receiving-votes St. Mary’s.

PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS
  • UT Tyler finished the 2024–25 season 8–20 overall and 5–17 in Lone Star Conference play, but the Patriots were competitive throughout the year with 12 games decided by 10 points or fewer.
  • Last season the Patriots went 5–10 on their home floor, 3–8 on the road, and 0–2 at neutral sites. UT Tyler finished non-conference play with a 3–3 record.
  • Of the 12 games decided by 10 points or fewer, the Patriots were within a single possession in the final minutes in a handful of those contests and held second-half leads in several.
  • UT Tyler returns four athletes from last year, including LSC Male Athletic Performance Athlete of the Year Sam Phipps, along with Hudson AndersonPatrick Carr, and Mate Kapanadze.
  • The Patriots add four junior college transfers—Chris CarpenterXavier WilliamsSean Emfinger, and Kyle Morgan—each arriving from strong JUCO programs and bringing toughness, size, and proven winning habits.
  • Transfer guard Boston Caldwell joins the Patriots after producing at both the junior college and Division III levels and is expected to contribute immediately.
  • A strong group of Australian newcomers also joins the roster, including freshmen Noah SuarjayaHeath Tenner, and Spencer Gaze, along with Greg Fowlds and Jacob Bell. The group is expected to boost the team's shooting, depth, and overall skill level.
  • The Patriots are 7-4 to start the year while shooting 48.4% from the field and 32% from deep while grabbing 40.1 rebounds per game and forcing 14.2 turnovers per game.
  • Kyle Morgan leads the Patriots with 11.5 points per game on 48.9% shooting and continues to be the team's top perimeter threat with 22 threes at a 44.9% clip. Sam Phipps controls the interior with 7.4 rebounds per game and a team-best 16 blocks and adding 15 steals, while Noah Suarjaya steers the offense with a 33-to-21 assist-to-turnover ratio.

THE HILLTOPPERS
 

St. Edward's is ranked No. 15 in the national coaches poll and enters the week at 15–3 overall and 4–3 in LSC play after splitting its last two games, including a two-point loss to No. 20 West Texas A&M.

The Hilltoppers are scoring 80.1 points per game while shooting 45.1% from the field and 33.5% from beyond the arc. Defensively, they are holding opponents to 67.3 points per game on 39.2% shooting and 28.8% from three-point range. Individually, they are led by Blake Nielsen, who is averaging 18.3 points per game on 47.3% shooting, with 23 made threes and 53 assists.

The Hilltoppers lead the all-time series 9–2 and have won the last two meetings against the Patriots. UT Tyler is 0–4 all-time in games played in Austin and coming off of a 70–55 loss in last year's matchup at home.
 

THE RATTLERS
 

St. Mary's is 11–4 on the year and 4–3 in LSC play and is receiving votes in the coaches poll. The Rattlers also dropped their matchup to No. 20 West Texas A&M last week by three points in double overtime.

St. Mary's is scoring 74.3 points per game while allowing 65.8 points per contest. The Rattlers are shooting 43.9% from the field and 34.5% from beyond the arc, while holding opponents to 43.3% shooting overall and 33.0% from three-point range. Individually, Damani Claxton leads the team with 15.6 points per game on 45.9% shooting, while also tallying 15 steals and 41 assists.

UT Tyler trails the all-time series 3–6 and has dropped each of the last five matchups. The Patriots fell in a double-overtime contest last year at home and are 1–3 all-time in games played in San Antonio.
 

HAWAIIAN NIGHT PRESENTED BY UT HEALTH EASY TEXAS
 
The Patriots will have Hawaiian Night on January 22nd as they host Lubbock Christian inside the HPC. There will be 500 Hawaiian shirts given away along with a student tailgate beginning at 4 p.m. and free food from Hawaiian Bros. Additionally, the ZOOperstars will be performing at halftime of the men's game.
