SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – The UT Tyler track and field program continued competition at the Bobcat Invitational with another strong day, highlighted by multiple school records, a national qualifier, and a deep list of top-15 finishes across the track and field events.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Aerin Thompson, who delivered a record-breaking performance in the women's 200m. The junior clocked a 23.51 to win the event, setting a new program record while posting the top NCAA Division II time this season.
Hannah Lakin added another historic performance in the women's 400m hurdles, breaking the school record with a time of 59.25 to finish second overall and secure a national qualifying mark. Zakaiya Hunte also recorded a top-15 finish in the event, placing 13th with a time of 1:02.11.
In the 200m on the men's side, Dylan Bennett turned in a strong performance with a sixth-place finish (20.90), while Jeremiah Evans added a fifth-place finish in the 400m hurdles (53.44).
The middle-distance group saw more success as Macy Cogburn set a new program record in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:34.20 to place sixth. Chris Kopecky followed with a record-breaking run of his own in the men's 1500m, finishing 10th with a time of 3:50.00.
In the field events, Jada Owens led the way with a program-record throw of 13.46 meters in the shot put to place 11th. She also added a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw (47.29 meters). Kaden Adams recorded a 13th-place finish in the men's shot put with a mark of 15.23 meters, while Kaitlyn Johnson added a 13th-place finish in the women's hammer throw (44.49 meters).
Zakaiya Hunte added another top-15 finish in the women's high jump, clearing 1.61 meters to place 11th overall.
The Patriots will wrap up competition at the Bobcat Invitational tomorrow as they look to build on an already impressive weekend.
