TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team is on a four-game winning streak and leading the American Southwest Conference in scoring, field goal percentage and assists entering a week where the Patriots will play at East Texas Baptist on Thursday and Louisiana College on Saturday.
UT Tyler (15-5, 8-4 ASC) is coming off home wins over LC and ETBU last week at the Herrington Patriot Center and will now meet ETBU (3-16, 1-10 ASC) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Ornelas Gymnasium in Marshall before playing at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Pineville, Louisiana against LC (6-11, 5-6 ASC). The Patriots, who lead the conference with 77.3 points per game, earned an 87-73 win over the Tigers last weekend after an 89-68 win over the Wildcats. The UT Tyler senior class enters with a 99-14 overall record during the past four seasons.
Michelle Obach leads the Patriots with 14.9 points per game along with 66 assists and 27 steals. A senior from Tyler, Obach scored 19 points on Saturday against ETBU and is averaging 3.5 assists per game. She has scored in double figures in seven straight games, including a season-best 30 points in an overtime win at Belhaven. Makenzi May scored 10 points against ETBU to reach 1,002 career points and also hit two 3-pointers. May, a senior from Mont Belvieu who is averaging 8.5 points per game, now has 205 career 3-pointers which is 12 shy of matching Lauren Harris who had 217 during her career from 2001-05 at Hardin-Simmons. She is currently leads the Patriots and is seventh in the ASC this season with 39 3-pointers this season.
D’Onna Matthews is second on the team with 10.9 points per game and 6.3 rebounds, while Dia Evans leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game and is also adding 7.5 points per game. Shuntay Raglin is adding 9.8 points per game and 3.9 rebounds, while Demi Cumby is averaging 7.3 points. Evans scored 10 points against ETBU and LC after having double-digit rebound performances against Ozarks and Belhaven. Matthews leads the Patriots with 24 blocked shots this season and is eighth in the conference.
UT Tyler has five regular season games remaining and leads the ASC with 306 assists and a 43.6 shooting percentage. The Patriots went 7-1 in January and will look to improve on a 4-3 record away from home this season with their games this week.
