Both Basketball Teams Hit the Court for Meetings With Texas A&M-Kingsville Tomorrow Night

Both the men's and women's Patriot basketball teams will return to the Herrington Patriot Center tomorrow night for games against Texas A&M-Kingsville

TYLER, TEXAS – Both UT Tyler men's and women's basketball teams will take on Texas A&M-Kingsville tomorrow night inside the Herrington Patriot Center.
 
Wednesday night's contests will be the first time both teams will play on their home court in back-to-back games since a Jan. 9 meeting with St. Edward's. The UT Tyler men's team enters Wednesday night's game fresh off of a 60-46 road win at St. Mary's on Monday afternoon for their fifth-straight win of the season, The women's squad most recently took the court on Sunday afternoon, falling by a 98-60 final to Texas A&M International.
 
Each program has just two series remaining on the 2020-21 schedule beginning with the Javelinas on Wednesday night. Both teams will head to Kingsville, Texas on Saturday afternoon for road match-ups with Texas A&M-Kingsville for the series finales prior to returning home on Mar. 2-3 for a pair of games against Western New Mexico.
 
FIVE IN A ROW
 
UT Tyler men's basketball took down St. Mary's on the road Monday afternoon for their fifth straight win dating back to Feb. 7 against Cameron. The Patriots held St. Mary's to a season-low 46 points and scored 28 points off of 21 turnovers for the Rattlers.
 
UT Tyler has forced 20 or more turnovers in all five of their wins, which stands as the longest winning streak for the program in Lone Star Conference play since beginning league play last season. The Patriots now rank fourth in the Lone Star Conference with a +2.56 turnover margin and rank seventh in the league in scoring defense (76.3 ppg).
 
A SEASON HIGH FOR THE ROOKIE
 
Freshman Taylor Jackson scored 24 points in the UT Tyler women's basketball's loss at Texas A&M International on Monday afternoon, which now stands as the highest individual point total in the Division II era for the Patriots. Jackson shot a perfect 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field in the effort and was a catalyst for a Patriot squad that scored 38 points in the second half against the Dustdevils.
 
Jackson has now gone for double-digit points in three different contests throughout the season and averages a team-best 9.6 points per contest.
 
A BALANCED SCORING EFFORT
 
The Patriot's men's team has been the epitome of unselfish on the offensive side of the ball throughout the current five-game winning streak. Micah Fuller has scored in double-digits in all but one of his 15 games played this season and leads the team with an average of 14.1 points per contest.
 
 
Da'Zhon Wyche totaled 26 and 30 points in wins over Cameron on Feb. 8 and UAFS on Feb. 13 and is averaging 18.0 points a game throughout the Patriot's five-game winning streak. The senior has shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from behind the three-point arc in the last five games and has elevated his season scoring average to 14.1 points per game.
 
Soloman Thomas and Emanuel Gant are the other two Patriots to average double-digit figures with season averages of 12.4 points per game and 11.1 points per game, respectively.
 
HISTORY AND SCOUTING THE JAVELINA'S WOMEN'S TEAM
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville will enter Wednesday's game with the Patriots with a 6-8 overall and Lone Star Conference record. The Javelinas last took the court back on Feb. 4 and Feb. 6 against St. Edward's, dropping both of those contests.
 
Brianna Pena leads Texas A&M-Kingsville as the lone Javelina to start in all 14 games for the squad and averages 14.1 points per game. Anastacia Mickens leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.6 boards per contest.
 
UT Tyler lost the only other meeting between the two programs by a 55-38 final tally back on Jan. 9, 2020.
 
HISTORY AND SCOUTING THE JAVELINA'S MEN'S TEAM
 
The men's squad for Texas A&M-Kingsville has won 11 straight games dating back to mid-December and enters the two games against UT Tyler ranked no. 10 in the latest NABC Top 25 National Coaches Poll. The Javelinas are ranked fourth in the league behind Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M and Dallas Baptist with an overall record of 13-1.
 
The Javelinas rank 11th in all of Division II basketball in scoring defense (64.9 ppg) and first in the Lone Star Conference in field goal percentage defense (40.9 percent). Forward Will Chayer took home consecutive Defensive and then Offensive Player of the Week honors on Feb 1 and Feb 7 and averages 10.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest.
