RICHARDSON, TEXAS – Graduate student
Micah Fuller received All-Lone Star Conference Second Team honors and junior
Milan Szabo was named to the men's basketball All-Academic Team to serve as the two representatives from UT Tyler on the 2022 Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball All-Conference Awards list.
Fuller was named as an All-LSC Second Team selection after leading UT Tyler in scoring with a season average of 14.5 points per game and captained the program to a host of firsts in the first season of full-fledged Division II membership. The Bessemer, Ala. native adds this year's Second Team selection to a 2021 All-LSC Third Team accolade last season.
Szabo was named as one of five representatives on the All-Academic Team after appearing in all 26 games in 2021-22 for UT Tyler while leading the team in rebounding with an average of 5.6 boards a game. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of their team's contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for their entire collegiate career.
Lubbock Christian's Parker Hicks was tabbed as the LSC Player of the Year, while Todd Duncan of Lubbock Christian was named as the LSC Coach of the Year after guiding the Chaps to the 2022 LSC Regular Season Championship.
Fuller was the heart and soul of a Patriot squad that surprised many in their first season of full-fledged eligibility at the Division II level, culminating at regular season's end with the program's first ever appearance in the LSC Postseason Tournament. UT Tyler got off to the best start in program history with a 7-0 record to begin the 2021-22 season, and then earned the program's first-ever national ranking as a Division II member back on Dec. 15
th in the no. 25 slot of the D2SIDA Men's Basketball National Media Poll.
UT Tyler earned a ranking in the NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings in both of the first two editions of the rankings in the no. 8 and no. 9 spots, and appeared within the top 10 of the D2SIDA South Central Region Poll for 10 straight weeks throughout the season.
Fuller's 14.5 points per game led the Patriots and ranked 14
th in the LSC at season's end. He played his best basketball at the end of the regular season, and went for 20 or more points in three out of his final four games, including a 23-point effort in the Patriot's loss to Midwestern State in the first round of the 2022 LSC Men's Basketball Championships.
The hot stretch for Fuller at the end of the year capped off six appearances in which he went for 20 or more points in 2021-22, including a season-high 24 on Feb. 24
th against UT Permian Basin. He shot 42.0 percent (100-of-238) from the field this season, and connected on a team-high 47 three-point makes as well.
The 2021-22 season capped off a historic career for Fuller as he climbed to no. 3 on the UT Tyler men's basketball all-time scoring list with 906 points in his three-year Patriot career. He also set the all-time UT Tyler men's basketball record with 313 made free throws in a career.
Szabo made 25 starts in his 26 appearances in 2021-22, and totaled 146 rebounds this season while averaging 7.5 points a game as well. He went for 10 or more points on eight different occasions, and posted his season best scoring outputs of 14 points back on Dec. 13 against Midwestern State and Feb. 26 against Angelo State.
The Levice, Slovakia native balanced that performance on the court with his studies as an Information Technology major. He becomes the first representative of UT Tyler to appear on the LSC Men's Basketball All-Academic Team list, and the first Patriot to earn an All-Academic award since the 2016-17 season.
