WHAT COACH MOSER IS SAYING

On the team's debut last week against Western State... "We tried to challenge our kids with the two exhibition games against Arkansas and Louisiana, but I'm not sure what we got out of the game against Arkansas, they're as good as anybody in the country. So I don't know how much we were truly prepared before the game against Western Colorado. I think our team battled, it was a tough game for both teams with new coaches so neither of us really had any scout or idea. I think our kids adjusted at halftime and really played their butts off and I think that's what I'm most impressed with our guys about."

On the strengths of his new-look Patriot team so far in 2023-24... "I think we have all sorts of different young men that provide us with different skill sets. We have some good shooters, some guys that can drive so we're really just trying to establish our offensive style. I like our skillset, but we just need more games to play together and see how we mesh and gel."

On the outlook for the three games at home this week during the Thanksgiving holiday... "Right after the game against Western Colorado we turned the film on and watched Northeastern State. They're really well coached and will provide all sorts of challenges, but the positive thing is that we get to see some film and watch some tendencies. They're gonna spread the floor and provide us some challenges because they play a five-out type offense. I'm excited to be at home and really kick start the season and I think our kids are ready to have some success, I'm not positive of when that's going to happen, but I know this team will fight until it does."

LAST TIME OUT

A Ryan Zambie attempt at the buzzer nearly completed a UT Tyler comeback on Friday afternoon in a 59-57 loss to Western Colorado in Canyon, Texas. The Patriots out-scored the Mountaineers by a 34-24 margin in the second half of action and cut a 12-point deficit midway through the final 20 minutes of play to just a single possession in the final seconds. UT Tyler went just 8-for-35 (22.9 percent) from the field in the first half, but put their halftime adjustments to good use to connect on 14-of-32 (43.7 percent) attempts in the second half. Senior Jonathan Jackson led the Patriots with 16 points, while Alec Zambie (11) and forward Juan Pablo Camargo (10) both reached double-digit scoring figures. Alec's brother Ryan Zambie and Camargo combined to score 19 of the final 21 points for the Patriots, including all 10 of Camargo's points in the ball game.

PATRIOT NEWS AND NOTES

- UT Tyler leads the Lone Star Conference in defensive scoring average after surrendering just 59.0 points in their lone outing of the year against Western Colorado. The Patriots limited Western Colorado to just 33.3 percent (16-for-48) from the field for the game and just six made baskets in the second half of action.
- The Patriots also lead the LSC in rebounding margin after out-rebounding the Mountaineers by a 45-to-37 margin last week.
- UT Tyler went 4-0 last season in non-conference play. The Patriots were also 4-0 in the month of November in 2022-23 and lost their first game in the month of November since Nov. 23, 2019.
- UT Tyler men's basketball is 138-103 all-time inside the Herrington Patriot Center and 34-33 on their home court as a Division II program.
- The Patriots are 233-278 (.456) all-time as a program and 53-74 (.420) since beginning Division II play in 2019-20. The Patriots are 24-52 in four seasons of Lone Star Conference play.
- The Patriots have shown glimpses of success during the Division II era, having earned national rankings early in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, but closed out each of the last two campaigns with three and eight game losing streaks, respectively. UT Tyler finished 9-17 last season and 5-17 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots had their best season of the Division II era the previous year as they went 16-10, made their first appearance in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament and were regionally ranked in three editions of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.
- Head coach Tim Moser will take the reigns of the program in 2023-24 as the fifth head coach in UT Tyler men's basketball history. Moser returns to the men's side of the collegiate game after serving as the Associate Head Coach for a remarkable turnaround within the UT Tyler women's basketball program. The Patriots went 19-9 in Moser's first season with the program in 2021-22, and most recently completed a 2022-23 season in which they claimed the NCAA South Central Regional Championship, advancing to the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Elite Eight in the second season of postseason eligibility. Moser played a key role in the turnaround of a program that went 3-37 in the first two years of Division II competition in 2019-20 and 2020-21, to a 46-17 record under the guidance of head coach Rebecca Alvidrez and Moser in 2021-22 and 2022-23. As a head coach, Moser holds a 511-174 career record (.747) and has won 13 conference championships en route to 12 conference or region coach of the year accolades. Combined with his totals as an assistant coach, Moser has coached 20 conference championship teams during his storied career. He has served as head coach on the men's side at Eastern Wyoming College from 2018-2021 and at Otero Junior College from 1998-2005. He went 150-31 (.828) over six seasons as head coach of the women's side at Alaska-Anchorage from 2006-12.
- The 2023-24 roster features just three returners from the 2022-23 roster for UT Tyler, only one of which saw game action last season. Redshirt senior Terrell Wilson will return for his second season in a UT Tyler uniform after earning All-Lone Star Conference honors in 2020-21 and 2021-22 at Midwestern State. The Houston, Texas native will serve as the leading returner in all statistical categories for the Patriots and averaged 7.7 points a contest last year.
- The 2023-24 roster will feature 16 newcomers to begin the year, seven junior college additions, five four-year transfers and four freshman. Wilson is joined by Michel Loftin and Lathan Wigington, who each redshirted last season, as returners.
- Juan Pablo Camargo averaged double-digit scoring figures in both of his seasons at Northwest College and will continue his career alongside teammate and countryman David Ayala. Ayala, who along with Camargo hails from Mexico, averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest during his career at Northwest College.
- Alec Zambie and Ryan Zambie will also bring a level a familiarity to the court for the Patriots as brothers. Alec will bring ties to the Lone Star Conference to UT Tyler as a transfer from Lubbock Christian and his older brother Ryan Division I experience as a transfer from Lafayette College.
- Jonathan Jackson, Nikolas Gustavson and Kenayo Frederick will add Division I experience to the roster as transfers from Liberty, North Alabama and UT Arlington, respectively. Jackson appeared in 63 games in three seasons at Liberty.
- Bryce Roberts, John Barbee, Donta Dawson Jr., Ikechi Chantilou, and Ryan Swan will all bring proven scoring history from the junior college level to the guard spot for the Patriots. Roberts was named the LCCAC Player of the Year after averaging over 17 points a game at LSU-Eunice. Barbee averaged 17.0 points a game and went for 20 or more points on 10 different occasions at Eastern Wyoming College.
- The four freshman for the Patriots will also have ample opportunity to contribute right away in David Vuckovic, Khalik Gardner, Jesse Fuller and Andre Skelin.
- UT Tyler is 1-0 all-time against Northeastern State having won the inaugural meeting between the two programs on Nov. 19th of last season.
