WHAT COACH MOSER IS SAYING
On the teams scrimmages against Arkansas and Louisiana... "Playing such high caliber teams like Arkansas and Louisiana were great for our program. Our kids were a little awestruck with the whole experience in Arkansas and their length and athleticism provided a daunting task for our young team. But we learned quite a bit as a staff and our players learned how winners compete. Hopefully those two games made us better."
On what he expects from his team in the season openers... "Our guys are excited to get this season kicked off. We know this weekend will bring two different challenges to our team. Western Colorado has a new coach so it's hard to know what they will do on either end of the floor, but we know they have good players and will be well prepared. UT Arlington is really good and really well coached. Our guys will need to play with a great competitive spirit to have success this weekend."Â
PATRIOT NEWS AND NOTES
- Friday will begin the 21st season in the history of the UT Tyler men's basketball program. The Patriots are 233-277 (.456) all-time as a program and 53-73 (.420) since beginning Division II play in 2019-20. The Patriots are 24-52 in four seasons of Lone Star Conference play.
- The Patriots have shown glimpses of success during the Division II era, having earned national rankings early in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, but closed out each of the last two campaigns with three and eight game losing streaks, respectively. UT Tyler finished 9-17 last season and 5-17 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots had their best season of the Division II era the previous year as they went 16-10, made their first appearance in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament and were regionally ranked in three editions of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.
- Head coach
Tim Moser will take the reigns of the program in 2023-24 as the fifth head coach in UT Tyler men's basketball history. Moser returns to the men's side of the collegiate game after serving as the Associate Head Coach for a remarkable turnaround within the UT Tyler women's basketball program. The Patriots went 19-9 in Moser's first season with the program in 2021-22, and most recently completed a 2022-23 season in which they claimed the NCAA South Central Regional Championship, advancing to the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Elite Eight in the second season of postseason eligibility. Moser played a key role in the turnaround of a program that went 3-37 in the first two years of Division II competition in 2019-20 and 2020-21, to a 46-17 record under the guidance of head coach Rebecca Alvidrez and Moser in 2021-22 and 2022-23. As a head coach, Moser holds a 511-173 career record (.747) and has won 13 conference championships en route to 12 conference or region coach of the year accolades. Combined with his totals as an assistant coach, Moser has coached 20 conference championship teams during his storied career. He has served as head coach on the men's side at Eastern Wyoming College from 2018-2021 and at Otero Junior College from 1998-2005. He went 150-31 (.828) over six seasons as head coach of the women's side at Alaska-Anchorage from 2006-12.
- The 2023-24 roster will feature just three returners from the 2022-23 roster for UT Tyler, only one of which saw game action last season. Redshirt senior
Terrell Wilson will return for his second season in a UT Tyler uniform after earning All-Lone Star Conference honors in 2020-21 and 2021-22 at Midwestern State. The Houston, Texas native will serve as the leading returner in all statistical categories for the Patriots and averaged 7.7 points a contest last year.Â
- The 2023-24 roster will feature 16 newcomers to begin the year, seven junior college additions, five four-year transfers and four freshman. Wilson is joined by
Michel Loftin and
Lathan Wigington, who each redshirted last season, as returners.
-
Juan Pablo Camargo averaged double-digit scoring figures in both of his seasons at Northwest College and will continue his career alongside teammate and countryman
David Ayala. Ayala, who along with Camargo hails from Mexico, averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest during his career at Northwest College.
-
Alec Zambie and
Ryan Zambie will also bring a level a familiarity to the court for the Patriots as brothers. Alec will bring ties to the Lone Star Conference to UT Tyler as a transfer from Lubbock Christian and his older brother Ryan Division I experience as a transfer from Lafayette College.
-
Jonathan Jackson,
Nikolas Gustavson and
Kenayo Frederick will add Division I experience to the roster as transfers from Liberty, North Alabama and UT Arlington, respectively. Jackson appeared in 63 games in three seasons at Liberty.
-
Bryce Roberts,
John Barbee,Â
Donta Dawson Jr.,Â
Ikechi Chantilou, and
Ryan Swan will all bring proven scoring history from the junior college level to the guard spot for the Patriots. Roberts was named the LCCAC Player of the Year after averaging over 17 points a game at LSU-Eunice. Barbee averaged 17.0 points a game and went for 20 or more points on 10 different occasions at Eastern Wyoming College.Â
- The four freshman for the Patriots will also have ample opportunity to contribute right away in
David Vuckovic,
Khalik Gardner,
Jesse Fuller and
Andre Skelin.
- UT Tyler went 4-0 last season in non-conference play. The Patriots were also 4-0 in the month of November in 2022-23 and haven't lost a game in the month of November since Nov. 23, 2019.Â
- The Patriots have won two straight season openers after starting the 2021-22 season 7-0 and the 2022-23 season 6-0.
- UT Tyler is 0-2 all-time against teams from RMAC after dropping contests to Westminster and Dixie State back in 2019-20.
- Western State and UT Tyler will meet for the first time in the history of the two programs.
- UT Tyler was selected to finish 15th in the 2023 Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Poll.
