LAST TIME OUT
UT Tyler connected on tying shots at the end of regulation and the first overtime period in a 106-105 double overtime loss to Cameron on Thursday night. The Patriots totaled the most points ever in a Lone Star Conference contest for the program in their league opener on Thursday night with 105 despite their second straight overtime loss. JuniorÂ
Bryce Roberts went for a career-high 27 points and joined four other Patriots in double-digit scoring efforts. Roberts hit the tying shot with seconds remaining on the clock in the first overtime period after forwardÂ
Alec Zambie sent the game to extra time with a dunk in the waning seconds of regulation. That dunk to tie the game at 79-79 after 40 minutes of play capped off what was yet another stellar second half of basketball for the Patriots. UT Tyler went 8-for-12 (66.6 percent) as a team in that second half from beyond the three-point line to negate a 44-35 halftime deficit. The Patriots hit five of their first six attempts from beyond the arc in the second half to take their first lead since the opening minute of the ballgame. The second overtime period went down to the wire once again as a key three-point make for the Aggies put them up 104-102 with 40 seconds left on the clock. Gustavson was fouled beyond the third point line with the Patriots trailing by two, but connected on just one of those free throw opportunities. Gustavson redeemed himself just seconds later with a jump shot with 17 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to just 106-105, a score that would hold through the waning seconds of the game.
UT Tyler was unable to keep pace with a hot-shooting Midwestern State side in a 99-78 defeat on Saturday. JuniorÂ
Bryce Roberts went for 26 points to lead a UT Tyler offense that shot 46.7 percent (28-for-60) from the floor in the game. Midwestern State was efficient throughout the contest, going 37-for-64 (57.8 percent) from the floor and led by double-digits throughout the entirety of the second half. UT Tyler largely kept pace offensively with the Mustangs for the majority of the first half, trailing just 40-39 with 5:21 left, but Midwestern State was able to pad a 51-43 advantage at the break. The Mustangs connected on the first shot of the second half and extended a 21-point lead at 66-45 with 16:11 remaining. UT Tyler only managed to narrow the deficit to 17 throughout the remainder of the game. Roberts went 10-for-19 from the field and 6-for-9 from beyond the three-point line. Junior Alex Zambie and graduate studentÂ
Jonathan Jackson both joined Roberts in double-digit scoring figures with 12 and 11 respectively.
WHAT COACH MOSER IS SAYING
On last week's high-scoring outputs for his team to start Lone Star Conference play... "Cameron is a tough place to play and I though our kids went in there and fought like heck, and really had every opportunity to win that game. Like we've been doing though, we still have those moments where we make three or four bone-headed plays and we just have to keep fixing those things and keep growing. On the defensive end, even though we shot the ball better, we can't give up 106 points in a game. So we really have to lock it in and make some changes there. At Midwestern, we ran into a buzzsaw. They lost their first game on Thursday against Dallas Baptist and they took it out on us. Even when we were scoring with them and playing with them in the first half, I didn't feel good about it. This week is an opportunity for me and my staff to find out who the winners are on this team are and who's going to make the winning plays. We're getting close to doing that. I saw alot of that last weekend and saw some kids that are really willing to step up."
On the emergence of Bryce Robert's scoring prowess... "Bryce is a competitor. That's the first thing about him, he does it everyday in practice, and is a kid that can get his own shot and shoot it at a very high level. But the biggest thing that I like about Bryce is that he's so competitive. He's in the gym all the time, he wants to be good and even though we're 1-5, we all know our record, that doesn't mean we're losers, and he's one of those kids that's a winner and we've got to just keep following his work ethic and leadership."
On the outlook for the weekend's pair of conference games at the HPC... "Road games in the Lone Star Conference are hard, so to put yourself in any type of contention you have to go out and win your home games. We're at a point now where we know how we have to play and we're going to make some changes on who to play. Eastern New Mexico is tough and they're very physical. We have to understand how physical that game is going to be and be ready for it right out of the gate. But this weekend is going to be about us. We have to keep growing and get better possession by possession and I think Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico will provide very tough challenges for us."
