TWO VALIANT EFFORTS
UT Tyler came up short in both games last weekend on the road at UT Permian Basin and #24 Angelo State, but threatened both teams on their home floor throughout each contest. Redshirt juniorÂ
Barnell Davis scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Patriots in Thursday's meeting with UT Permian basin, finishing the night 8-for-16 (50.0 percent) from the field and 4-for-8 (50.0 percent) from beyond the three-point line. JuniorÂ
Jordan Hairston and sophomoreÂ
Hasaan Herrington each finished with 10 points in offensive support of Davis' career night. UT Tyler finished the night 20-for-61 (32.8 percent) as a team and 9-for-23 (39.1 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. UT Permian Basin seized control with a double-digit lead in the first half and never looked back after using a pair of three-point makes in the final minute of play to take a 40-31 advantage into the halftime break. The Falcons maintained a 10 point or more advantage from the 14:58 mark in the second half, leading by as many as 24 at the 2:50 mark. UT Tyler gave #24 Angelo State a scare despite a 70-64 loss on Saturday afternoon. JuniorÂ
Jordan Hairston dropped a season-high 19 points and UT Tyler held a 37-36 lead at the halftime break before the Rams defense stiffened in the second half. The Patriots went just 8-for-22 (36.3 percent) from the field in the final 20 minutes of basketball while Angelo State scored 34 to secure the six-point victory. The Patriots kept it close at 53-53 with 5:31 remaining in the game, but a 17-11 run for the Rams from that point forward gave Angelo State the win. Hairston finished his afternoon 6-for-13 from the field and 3-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc, and was joined in double-digit scoring figures by seniorsÂ
Milan Szabo (16) and Mohammed Diallo (11). SophomoreÂ
Kyle Frelow led the rebounding effort with six.
WHAT COACH WILSON IS SAYING
On the effort his team's displayed on last week's road trip... "The kids that were there did a great job and were bought in. They were definitely ten-toes down to what we were trying to get done. I was very proud of the effort of our guys and the way that they represented the university."
On the mission in this weekend's games against DBU... "DBU first and foremost regardless of what we're playing for presents a problem because they are a talented roster. They are in a position to continue their season so those things are a challenge no matter what. But we're playing for everything. UT Tyler is on the front of our jersey. The university has given us it's name, The University of Texas at Tyler is on the front of our jersey, and anytime that happens we don't care what is on the line, we will compete our hearts out."
THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE STANDINGS
UT Tyler was officially eliminated from securing one of the eight available spots in the Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Championships in Frisco, Texas in last Thursday's loss at UT Permian. The Patriots enter this week with a 5-15 record in Lone Star Conference play and a 9-15 overall record.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
DBU enters Thursday and Saturday's battle of the Patriots tied for the eighth and final spot in the Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Championships with Texas A&M International. Both sides have two games remaining on the regular season schedule this weekend, making for an interesting finish for the final spot in the LSC Men's Basketball Championships. The Patriots split last weekend's road trip to #24 Angelo State and UT Permian Basin with a 71-57 loss to Angelo State and a 63-68 win over UT Permian Basin. Three Patriots average double-digit scoring figures in Cameron Kahn (13.4 ppg) Ricky Lujan (12.4 ppg) and Ta'Jay Dunlap (11.6 ppg) for an offense that ranks 12th in the LSC with an average of 70.1 points per game. The DBU defense has been exceptional throughout the season, and ranks second on the year in the league allowing just 65.8 points per contest. DBU holds the all-time series advantage 2-1, with UT Tyler's lone win coming last year on Dec. 11th by a 77-60 margin.

The senior adds the Academic All-District award to his 2021-22 Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team recognition last spring. Szabo leads the Patriots this season with an average of 6.1 rebounds per game and has added in an average of 8.0 points per contest as well.
