PATRIOT NEWS AND NOTES

- UT Tyler dropped both of their contests over the course of opening weekend at the Far West Texas Showdown last weekend. The Patriots fell 82-59 on Saturday afternoon to Black Hills State and 62-59 to (RV) Metro State on Sunday afternoon.
- The Patriots will open their 2024-25 home schedule this weekend with the 2024 South Central Region Challenge presented by Sqwincher. The Patriots will play against the other two teams alongside last week's opponents Black Hills State and Metro State to have been picked within the top four of the 2024-25 RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll in their home debuts. Colorado School of Mines and Regis both split last weekend against Lone Star Conference opposition.
- Dontrell Hewlett and Juan Pablo Camargo both led UT Tyler with an average of 11.5 points per game in last week's season openers. Hewlett went for point totals of 9 and 14 and Camargo point totals of 10 and 13.
- UT Tyler averaged 59.0 points per game as an offense last weekend and surrendered an average of 72.0 points per game.
- The Patriots sit 236-304 (.438) all-time as a program and hold a 48-83 (.372) record in five complete seasons of play at the NCAA Division II level. UT Tyler went 3-25 and 2-20 in Lone Star Conference play last season and have produced a 26-72 (.265) record in LSC games all-time.
- The University of Texas at Tyler men's basketball program has been selected no. 14 in the 2024 Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Preseason Poll as announced by the conference office. The Patriots received 152 votes to appear no. 14 in the annual preseason poll. West Texas A&M will enter the season as the preseason favorites after earning 687 total points and 28 first-place votes.
- Head coach Tim Moser begins his second season as head coach of the program. Moser returns to the men's side of the collegiate game after serving as the Associate Head Coach for a remarkable turnaround within the UT Tyler women's basketball program.  As a head coach, Moser holds a 514-200 career record (.747) and has won 13 conference championships en route to 12 conference or region coach of the year accolades. Combined with his totals as an assistant coach, Moser has coached 20 conference championship teams during his storied career. He has served as head coach on the men's side at Eastern Wyoming College from 2018-2021 and at Otero Junior College from 1998-2005. He went 150-33 (.828) over six seasons as head coach of the women's side at Alaska-Anchorage from 2006-12.
- The 2024-25 roster features 11 returners and 11 newcomers, providing coach Moser and his staff a balanced assortment of returning experience and incoming talent. Redshirt junior Nikolas Gustavson returns to the court for UT Tyler this season after appearing in 22 games last season with 14 starts, scoring double-digit point totals in eight appearances throughout the season. Senior Juan Pablo Camargo started all 28 games a season ago, averaging 5.8 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per contest. Khalik Gardner, who showed promise as a true freshman a year ago, is also set to return with a year of development under his belt and will round out the three most experienced returners for coach Moser and his staff. David Ayala, John Barbee, Donta Dawson Jr. and Jesse Fuller will all return to the roster as well after seeing meaningful minutes throughout the course of last season.
- The newcomers to the 2024-25 roster vary in backgrounds, but will all add to the length and athleticism of a roster that was close to competing with the majority of the Lone Star Conference last season. Dontrell Hewlett, Jadin Penigar and Xavier McCord join the program as proven contributors at the Division II level. Akok Machar, Sam Phipps and Hudson Anderson will bring high level junior college experience to the program, while Mareng Gotkouth and Arnaud Revaz will join the team with Division I backgrounds and a wealth of talent. A handful of freshman will also get a chance to see minutes this season.
- The Patriots have shown glimpses of success during the Division II era, having earned national rankings early in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, but closed out both campaigns with three and eight game losing streaks, respectively. UT Tyler finished 9-17 last season and 5-17 in Lone Star Conference play. The Patriots had their best season of the Division II era the previous year as they went 16-10, made their first appearance in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament and were regionally ranked in three editions of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings.

SCOUTING COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES

- Colorado School of Mines opened their 2024-25 season with an 89-78 loss against (RV) Lubbock Christian and an 83-63 win against St. Mary's at their own South Central Regional Crossover on their home floor. The Orediggers went 24-9 last season and finished 17-5 in RMAC play, falling to Dallas Baptist in the first round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
- Colorado School of Mines opened the year no. 8 in the NABC Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and were selected as favorites in the Preseason RMAC Coaches Poll.
- Majok Deng and Juani Dassie both scored 10 or more points in both games last weekend, each averaging 16.5 points per game. Deng was an All-RMAC First Team selection and a D2CCA Second Team All-South Central Region selection last season.
- Head coach Pryor Orser is in his 24th season at the helm of the program and is the winningest coach in the history of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a record of 446-228. Mines has won five RMAC regular season championships and have made 12 NCAA Tournaments under the director of Orser.
- Friday night will be the first ever meeting between Colorado School of Mines and UT Tyler.

SCOUTING REGIS

- Regis began their season in the same event as Colorado School of Mines last week in Golden, Colo., losing to St. Mary's by a 76-56 final before defeating Lubbock Christian 92-83. The Rangers were picked fourth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll after going 15-14 and 12-10 in RMAC play last season.
- Kobe Sanders averaged 18.5 points last weekend to lead three Rangers that averaged double-digit scoring totals, including a 28 point performance against Lubbock Christian. Sanders connected on six three-point makes in that 28-point effort after transferring in from Concordia University Irvine.
- The Rangers as a whole made 24 three pointers and shot over percent from long range between the two games. They surrendered 79.5 points per contest.
