TYLER, TEXAS – The UT Tyler baseball program secured a doubleheader sweep over Cameron, taking both games by identical 5–1 and 5–4 scores behind timely hitting and strong pitching performances throughout the day.
GAME ONE
The Patriots used timely hitting and a dominant complete game on the mound to take game one of the doubleheader, 5–1, over Cameron. UT Tyler tallied nine hits in the victory while holding the Aggies to just one run on five hits.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before Cameron broke through in the third. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly allowed the Aggies to take an early 1–0 lead.
UT Tyler threatened multiple times early, including leaving three runners on in the third, but broke through in the fifth inning. Brock Bearden sparked the rally with a leadoff double down the line before Luke Smith reached on an error to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Kaston Mason delivered the biggest swing to that point, lining a two-run double into the gap to give the Patriots a 2–1 advantage.
The Patriots continued to build on their lead in the sixth. Spencer Simpson worked a walk and moved into scoring position before Bearden came through again with an RBI single to extend the lead. Later in the inning, Connor Clark added a sacrifice fly to bring home another run and make it 4–1.
UT Tyler added an insurance run in the seventh after Drew Schmidt reached on an error and advanced to third on a pair of miscues. Tanner Hornback capped the scoring with an RBI single to push the lead to 5–1.
On the mound, Julio Garcia was in complete control after the third inning. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four. He retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced to secure the win.
Bearden led the Patriots offensively with a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included a double and an RBI. Hornback and Cole Ketzner each added multi-hit games, while Mason finished with two RBIs in the win.
GAME TWO
The Patriots completed the doubleheader sweep with a hard-fought 5–4 victory in game two, using three home runs and late-game execution to hold off a late push from Cameron.
Cameron struck first in the opening inning, stringing together three hits to take a 1–0 lead. UT Tyler answered in the second after Cole Ketzner doubled into the gap and came around to score on an RBI single from Spencer Simpson to even the score at 1–1.
The Patriots grabbed their first lead in the third when Travis Bragg launched a solo home run to deep left field, putting UT Tyler ahead 2–1. Cameron responded in the bottom half, capitalizing on a pair of hits to plate two runs and reclaim a 3–2 advantage.
UT Tyler answered once again in the fourth as Ketzner delivered a solo home run to tie the game at 3–3. The Patriots continued their power surge in the fifth when Bragg struck again, blasting his second home run of the game to give UT Tyler a 4–3 lead.
After both teams traded scoreless innings, the Patriots added a crucial insurance run in the seventh. Brock Bearden led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI knock from Drew Schmidt to extend the lead to 5–3.
Cameron threatened in the bottom of the seventh, using a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one and bring the tying run into scoring position. However, UT Tyler closed the door, recording the final out to secure the 5–4 win and complete the sweep.
Travis Bragg led the offensive effort with a two-home run performance, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ketzner added a perfect 3-for-3 game with a home run and two doubles, while Simpson and Schmidt each drove in runs.
On the mound, Coleson Abel delivered a strong relief performance, stabilizing the game after Cameron's third-inning rally and keeping the Patriots in front down the stretch. He improved to 5–0 on the season after tossing 4.1 innings with six strikeouts.
With the sweep, UT Tyler moves to 21–8 on the year and will look to carry that momentum into the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they aim to complete the sweep over Cameron.
