Patriots Explode for 23 Runs in Series-Opening Rout

Clark sets single-season stolen base record as UT Tyler powers past UTPB with 17 hits and four home runs

TYLER, TEXAS – The UT Tyler baseball team delivered an offensive explosion at Irwin Field on Friday, routing UT Permian Basin 23-2 to open the series in dominant fashion. The Patriots piled up 17 hits, drew eight walks, and launched four home runs while improving to 23-8 on the season.

UT Permian Basin struck first with a two-run top of the first, but UT Tyler answered immediately and never looked back. Connor Clark ignited the response with a leadoff home run to left, and the Patriots followed with three walks and timely hitting to take a 5-2 lead by the end of the inning.

UT Tyler continued to apply pressure in the second as Clark sparked things again, singling and swiping two bases before Tanner Hornback delivered a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 6-2. Clark's steals marked his 22nd and 23rd of the season, setting a new single-season program record.

The Patriots broke things open in the third with a three-run frame. Luke Smith and Drew Schmidt each delivered RBI singles to push the advantage to 9-2, capitalizing on an error to keep the inning alive.

After a dominant shutdown inning from Caden Copeland in the fourth, the offense stayed hot. Cole Ketzner launched a solo home run, and Clark and Smith added RBI hits to extend the lead to 12-2.

UT Tyler put the game out of reach in the fifth as Brock Bearden crushed a grand slam to left-center, highlighting a four-run inning that stretched the margin to 16-2.

The Patriots weren't done yet. In the sixth, they erupted for six more runs behind a two-run home run from Lane Epperson and RBI knocks from Bryce Jewell and Ben Lea, pushing the total to 22 runs before adding one more to cap the 23-2 victory.

Bearden led the offensive charge with a 3-for-4 performance and four RBIs, while Clark finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored, two RBIs, and his record-breaking steals. Ketzner and Epperson each added home runs, and Lea provided a spark off the bench with two hits and two RBIs.

On the mound, Copeland earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs while striking out three. Sam Nitzke closed the door with two scoreless innings, striking out three and not allowing a hit.

With the win, UT Tyler takes a 1-0 lead in the series and will look to continue its momentum into Saturday's doubleheader.
