KERRVILLE – George Toone shot an opening-round 74 to lead UT Tyler which is in third place at the Schreiner Spring Shootout after the completion of 18 holes on Monday at the par-72 Comanche Trace golf course.
Toone is tied for 11th entering Tuesday’s final round after carding a 35-39 – 74 for a first-round 2-over-par, while Buddy Hallman and Nicklaus Cuny are tied for 15th after first-round 75s. Hallman shot 37-38 to open the second spring tournament and Cuny shot 36-39 for his 3-over round. Cody Gilbert (38-41 – 79) and Alex Trivanovich (41-38 – 79) are T33 with 79s. Mid-year transfer Darion Daniels is playing in his first tournament for the Patriots and shot a 39-40 – 79 as an individual.
The Patriots have a team total of 303 after Monday’s round and will be chasing Schreiner (288) and Texas Lutheran (297) on Tuesday. SU’s Jake Bell leads the individual leaderboard after carding a 33-37 – 70 for the host, while teammate Jacob Gentry (37-34 – 71) and TLU’s Kraig Zimmerhanzel (37-34 – 71) are in second with 1-under rounds. The Patriots are tied with Hardin-Simmons in the team standings, while Southwestern (304), Concordia (304) and Texas-Dallas (304) are right behind. Trinity is in the mix also with a 305 that includes a 72 from Jacob Hudson who is in fourth along with UTD’s Levi Petitt.
The tournament will resume with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. UT Tyler will return to action after this week’s tournament by hosting the Tyler Rose Shootout on Friday, March 18 at the Cascades Golf Club.
