WAIKOLOA, HAWAII – The University of Texas at Tyler men's golf team jumped up a spot on the team leaderboard after a 288 in the third and final round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Wednesday morning.
The Patriots 288 was spearheaded by a four-under par 66 from sophomore
Jackson Powers, the second-best round of the final 18 in the event for the field. Power's 66 jumped the Mansfield, Texas native up 16 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 8
th.
UT Tyler also made a move up the team leaderboard at the Waikoloa Beach Course, finishing in 10
th place in the event with a three-round total of 893 (303-302-288).
Colorado Christian claimed the team crown with a one-under 839 (282-269-288) total for the three rounds, shooting a 288 in Wednesday's final round to close out the event with a 10-stroke victory. Cam Sandland of Colorado Christian captured individual honors with a seven-under par total of 203 (72-61-70) for the tournament.
Powers final round featured four birdies and no bogeys, vaulting him up the leaderboard and into the top 10 for the second tournament of the fall semester. UT Tyler used Power's stellar final round to post their best showing of the event, finishing just eight-over par on the day thanks to the 66 from Powers as well as a 71 from sophomore
Carter Lewis.
Lewis finished the event with a 222 (74-77-71) total in a tie for 32
nd place after his one-over par round on Wednesday. Sophomore
Garrett Honeycutt also played well in the final round, posting 74 to finish in a tie for 44
th with a 226 (78-74-74) total.
Freshman
Jackson Naeger, who competed as an individual in the event, finished off a great tournament in his own right with a final round 72 to claim a top-25 finish. His 72 brought his three-round total to 219 (70-77-72), and placed him in a tie for 25
th place. Classmates
Trent Pollard (237) and
Francesco Abba (240) rounded out the scores on the scoring team for the Patriots.
Freshman
Alex Kopenhaver finished up his tournament as an individual competitor with a round of 78 to finish in a tie for 61
st place with a 237 (79-80-78).
UT Tyler's quality 288 in the final round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate gives the Patriots momentum heading into their offseason between the four completed fall tournaments and the upcoming spring championship season. A full schedule for that spring slate of tournaments will be announced soon.
