PUEBLO, COLO. – The UT Tyler men's golf team positioned themselves in the heart of the team leaderboard following the opening round of the Farmer Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at Pueblo Country Club on Monday afternoon with a team total of 287.
The Patriots were a combined three-over par in their counting four scores on Monday afternoon and sit in ninth place in another field loaded with South Central Region and Lone Star Conference foes. UT Tyler played their best golf of the day on the back nine in round one, shooting a combined four-under on their counting scores.
Sophomore
Garrett Honeycutt led the back nine charge for UT Tyler, combining a one-over front nine 36 with three birdies on the back nine to shoot a one-under 70 for the day. Sophomore
Jackson Powers made four birdies and five pars on the back to turn around his card for the day and post an even-par 71.
Honeycutt enters tomorrow's final round in a tie for 20
th place on the individual leaderboard while Powers sits in a tie for 28
th.
The stellar back nine play for the Patriots was much needed for the squad on Monday as the top seven finishers on the team leaderboard all posted under-par team totals for the day, led by a ten-under 274 for round one leader Oklahoma Christian. 27 players finished under par for the day, led by Texas A&M-Commerce's Zach Burch, who posted a 66.
Freshman
Jackson Naeger played his best round so far in his young Patriot career, carding a 72 to sit in a tie for 36
th. Freshman
Francesco Abba rounded out the counting scores with a 74 on Monday, and sits in a tie for 57
th on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore
Carter Lewis remained steady throughout his first round of tournament golf this fall, and shot 77.
The Patriots sit ahead of three Lone Star Conference teams and a host of South Central/West Region foes at the conclusion of round one in the 19-team field.
UT Tyler will finish up play in the event tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m. off of hole number one.
