THORNTON, COLO. – The University of Texas at Tyler women's golf team defeated a host of South Central Region opponents on their way to a third-place standing after two rounds of the 2021 Swan Memorial in Thornton, Colo. on Monday.
Raelynn Hardgrave,
Brooke Wagner and
Zoe Mayfield will all enter the third and final round tomorrow afternoon in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard after pacing the team to a 621 (316-305) total on the day. UT Tyler trails only Midwestern State and Colorado-Colorado Springs, a pair of perennial national contenders, and will look to make up eight strokes on Colorado-Colorado Springs and a single shot on Midwestern State in tomorrow morning's final round.
Hardgrave shot a second-round 72, matching the low round of the afternoon, and will enter Tuesday in fourth place on the individual leaderboard after a first round 78. Hardgrave shot one-over on the front nine at Todd Creek Golf Club and a one-under score of 35 on the back nine to help move UT Tyler up a spot on the leaderboard after placing fourth with an opening score of 316 in the morning round.
That 305 that vaulted the Patriots over Colorado Christian into third was the second-lowest score team score in the tournament.
Mayfield and Wagner both improved on their second 18 scores alongside Hardgrave for the Patriots, as Wagner posted a 76 and Mayfield a 77 to put the Patriots in position to earn some much needed regional victories in the event. Both Patriots totaled 156 on the day and stand in a tie for ninth place on the leaderboard.
Julia Kerrigan continued to play well for head coach
Grant Spencer in her opening round on Monday, carding a 79 to help lead the Patriots to a team score of 316. She followed up that round of 79 with an 80 in the afternoon round, and sits in a tie for 19
th with a 159 total for the event.
Sora Kim rounded out the scoring for the Patriots with scores of 83-84 on the day. She sits in a tie for 60
th place with a 167 total.
UT Tyler finished the day ahead on the leaderboard of four Lone Star Conference foes and a host of South Central Region teams. Tomorrow's round will be vital for the Patriots as their standing could earn the team multiple victories over potentially national-ranked opponents.
Play will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning at Todd Creek Golf Club.
