LAREDO, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler men's golf team finished in second place in the opening tournament of the semester following a 306 in the final round of the 2022 Jack Brown Memorial Invite.
That final round 306 on Monday morning placed the Patriots in second place on the team leaderboard with a three-round total of 914 (305-303-306), 11 strokes clear of third-place DBU. UT Tyler placed three individuals within the top 10 of the individual leaderboard, led by sophomore
Jackson Powers, who claimed a fifth place finish following a final round 72 at Laredo Country Club.
St. Mary's took home team honors in the event with an 877 (291-296-290) total, clearing the field by 37 strokes. Ryan Dixon of St. Mary's took home the individual crown with rounds of 68-74-70 for a four-under par total in the tournament.
The 72 for Powers was the third lowest score of Monday's final round, and moved the Mansfield, Texas product up two spots on the individual leaderboard into his fifth-place finish. Powers made four birdies and four bogeys on the day and finished the event with a seven-over par total of 223 (75-76-72).
Freshman
Jackson Naeger and
Alex Kopenhaver joined Powers with top 10 finishes, as Naeger posted a three-round total of 226 (77-73-76) and Kopenhaver a 229 (76-79-74). Naeger finished seventh and Kopenhaver 10
th following final rounds of 76 and 74 to support Powers' even-par total of 72.
Sophomore
Carter Lewis posted the fourth counting score for the Patriots on Monday with an 84, finishing up the opening spring event with a 239 (79-76-84) total and a tie for 18
th place finish. Freshman
Trent Pollard was the final Patriot on the scoring team for UT Tyler, carding an 85 on Monday afternoon to finish in a tie for 22
nd with a 240 (77-78-85) total.
Sophomore
Garrett Honeycutt competed as an individual for the Patriots, and closed out his tournament with a final-round 81 to finish with a three-round total of 235 (77-77-81).
The Patriots picked up head-to-head victories over Lone Star Conference foes DBU and Texas A&M International, and began their championship spring semester with their first top three finish of the 2021-22 season.
UT Tyler will travel to Henderson, Nevada for their second tournament of the spring season on Mar. 6-8 at the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Legacy Golf Club.
