HENDERSON, NEVADA – The UT Tyler men's golf team concluded play in the Las Vegas Desert Classic at The Legacy Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon with a team total of 300.
The Patriot's low round of the tournament placed the team in 17
th place on the team leaderboard with a 918 (309-309-300) three-round total. UT Tyler's finish put the Patriots ahead of a pair of in-region foes on the team leaderboard in Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines, and featured a two-under par round of 70 from sophomore
Alex Kopenhaver.
Kopenhaver's final round featured four birdies and an eagle and moved the McKinney, Texas native up 21 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 69
th place with a 232 (83-79-70) total.
Host Missouri St. Louis captured the team crown with an 873 (282-297-294) team total for the three rounds in a loaded field that featured eight teams ranked within the national top-25 rankings and three teams within the top-10 according to GolfStat. Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk of Texas A&M-Commerce won the individual crown with a seven-under par 209 (69-71-69) total.
Sophomore
Garrett Honeycutt provided the next low round of the day for UT Tyler behind Kopenhaver, carding a 73 on Tuesday to finish with a 242 (84-85-73) total and a tie for 91
st place finish. Classmate
Jackson Powers finished off his tournament with a final round 77 to claim a tie for 31
st finish with a 223 (72-74-77) total.
Freshman
Jackson Naeger carded a final round 80 to round out the four counting scores alongside Kopenhaver, Honeycutt and Powers, and claimed a tie for 84
th place finish with a three-round aggregate of 238 (77-81-80). Sophomore
Carter Lewis posted an 85 on Tuesday to slide into 83
rd place with a 237 (77-75-85) three-round total.
UT Tyler will get back on the links on Mar. 14-15 at the Oak Tree Invitational at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla.
