PUEBLO, COLO. – The University of Texas at Tyler men's golf team finished the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational on a high note with a three-under par total of 285 in Tuesday morning's final round.
The quality final round at Walking Stick Golf Course placed UT Tyler in seventh place in the event with a three-day total of 877 (298-294-285), and secured head-to-head wins over Lone Star Conference foes DBU and Lubbock Christian. Sophomore
Jackson Naeger posted his third consecutive round of 70 to finish in sixth place on the individual leaderboard with a six-under par total of 210 (70-70-70) for the event.
Junior
Seth Campbell matched Naeger's two-under par final round with a 70 as well, while juniors
Alex Kopenhaver and
Carter Lewis provided the additional two counting scores for UT Tyler with rounds of 72 and 73, respectively.
Colorado State-Pueblo dominated the field in their home event, capturing team honors with a 42-under par three-day total of 822 (272-273-277), 33 strokes clear of the field.
Naeger made three birdies and a bogey on the back nine and nine straight pars on the front nine to complete the opening team event of the season for the Patriots with the lowest 54-hole total of his collegiate career. The sophomore led the field with 41 pars for the event and made just two bogeys and a double bogey for the tournament.
Lewis finished in a tie for 39
th place with a 225 (76-76-73) total for the tournament following the 73 on Tuesday morning, two strokes ahead of Campbell and graduate student
Carson Whitton. Campbell shot rounds of 79-77-70 and Whitton rounds of 73-72-81 to both finish with a 226 in a tie for 42
nd place.
Kopenhaver rounded out the scoring team for UT Tyler with a 229 (81-76-72) for a 52
nd place finish. Junior
Garrett Honeycutt competed as an individual in the event and posted rounds of 77-73-77 for a 227 total.
The Patriots under-par final round jumped DBU into the best finish of the three LSC teams in the field, and should provide UT Tyler with some positive momentum heading into the heart of their fall slate of events.
UT Tyler is scheduled to compete at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational for their next event in Amarillo, Texas on Oct. 3-4.
