DALLAS, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler men's golf team completed shortened play in the DBU Invitational on Tuesday afternoon in their opening event of the 2022-23 season.
The individual-only event was shortened to just 18 holes of competition due to lightning in the Dallas area despite the field beginning play in round two of the scheduled 36 holes of competition. No team scores were tallied in the event, making for just a single, 18-hole score to be counted for the entirety of the tournament.
Junior
Alex Kopenhaver led the Patriots with a one-under par round of 69, carding nine straight pars on the front nine before making the turn at a one-under total of 34 on the back nine. Kopenhaver finished in a tie for 2
nd place with his opening round of the 2022-23 season alongside five other competitors.
St. Mary's Christian Hansen posted the low round of the field with a three-under par 67.
Classmates
Seth Campbell and
Garrett Honeycutt were next up on the leaderboard for UT Tyler in a tie for 12th place, posting one-over par totals of 71 for the day. Junior
Carter Lewis, sophomore
Trent Pollard and graduate student
Carson Whitton were one shot back of the Campbell-Honeycutt duo in a tie for 17
th place with rounds of 72.
Freshman
Luke Emerson and sophomore
Francesco Abba rounded out the eight Patriots within the top 25 of the leaderboard with rounds of 73 to provide what was a balanced day of scoring for UT Tyler despite the shortened event.
Sophomore
Ryan Willis posted a round of 75 to finish in a tie for 29
th place, while junior
Jackson Powers and sophomore
Jackson Naeger both carded a 76 to round out the scoring in a tie for 32
nd place.
UT Tyler will compete in their first team event of the 2022-23 season on Sept. 19-20 at the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo.
