THACKERVILLE, OKLA. – No. 4 seeded UT Tyler knocked off no. 1 seed Midwestern State in the semifinal match and finished as 2023 Lone Star Conference Medal Match Finalists after falling to no. 2 seed Oklahoma Christian in the championship match.
Freshman
Luke Emerson birdied the 18
th hole to secure what was eventually the winning point for the Patriots in the semifinal match against top seeded Midwestern State. Emerson's birdie and round of 70 secured the third point to take down the Mustangs by a 3-2 final at Winstar Golf Club's Scissortail Golf Course.
Graduate student
Carson Whitton won his match over Midwestern State's Jake Leatherwood with a round of 67, and sophomore
Seth Campbell defeated Seth Bearden with a round of 75.
Campbell and Whitton set the tone for the match with wins in the first two matches out on the course, and then Emerson solidified the upset of the No. 16 nationally-ranked Mustangs with a birdie on his final hole to claim the third point.
Midwestern State won the stroke play portion of the event and stood as the no. 1 seed in the four-team medal match play bracket. No. 2 seeded Oklahoma Christian handily defeated Cameron by a 4-0-1 final in their semifinal match to advance to the championship match alongside UT Tyler.
The Eagles kept that momentum going with a 4-0-1 victory over the Patriots to claim the 2023 Lone Star Conference Men's Golf Championship in the afternoon championship round.
Oklahoma Christian, who entered the week ranked atop the NCAA South Central Regional Rankings and no. 8 in Division II golf, secured the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II South Central/West Super Regional on May 11-13 at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park, Calif.
The top 10 teams and four individuals not on advancing teams from both the West and South Central regions will make up that field with selection by the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Committee set for Friday, April 28 on NCAA.com.
The Patriots will now wait to see if they receive one of the eight available at-large bids into the field.
The Patriot's finish on Wednesday solidified the program as a rising contender in the Lone Star Conference after finishing fourth in the stroke play portion of the event with rounds of 283-296-299.
