SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Junior
Jay Shero claimed the individual title and UT Tyler finished in third place on the team leaderboard at the Rattler Invitational.
Shero shot a final round 68 on Tuesday at Dominion Country Club to finish the tournament 11-under par and claimed a one-stroke victory over Odessa College's Sungyeop Cho. The Patriots finished in third place on the team leaderboard with an 869 (297-286-286) three-round total, six strokes back of team champion Midwestern State and four strokes back of runner-up DBU.
Midwestern State posted rounds of 283-291-289 for a one-under par team total of 863. DBU finished with a one-over par 865 (291-288-286) total.
UT Tyler finished the final few holes of their second round on Tuesday morning after a frost delay Monday morning prevented the field from completing the 36 holes of scheduled play. The Patriots finished off a second round 286 as a team for the second round and then matched that total in the third round.
The third-place finished notched four head-to-head victories against Lone Star Conference foes and a victory over no. 10 nationally-ranked Henderson State.
Shero went bogey free in his final round on Tuesday to overcome a three-shot deficit to Cho at the start of the day. The Granbury, Texas native, who missed the fall semester with an injury, made four birdies and 12 pars in his final round to secure individual honors in his UT Tyler debut. His 205 total is the third lowest in the history of the Rattler Invitational, bested only by Blake Slaughter of St. Edward's in 2004 and Abilene Christian's Corbin Renner in 2012, both of which shot 204.
Seth Campbell and
Jackson Naeger joined Shero with under-par rounds in the third and final round, posting a pair of 71's. Campbell climbed into 12
th place on the individual leaderboard with a three-over par 219 (78-70-71) total.
Naeger's solid final round moved him 13 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 31
st place following rounds of 77-77-71 for a 224 total. Senior
Carter Lewis, who finished in a tie for 29
th with a 224 (76-72-76) in the event, provided the fourth counting score for the Patriots with a final round 224.
Junior
Carson Wray shot 78 in the final round to slide into a tie for 44
th place with a 229 (76-75-78) three-round total. Classmate
Gage Burnham finished in a tie for 41
st place as an individual competitor following rounds of 75-78-75.
UT Tyler has now finished within the top five of the team leaderboard in four out of their five events in 2023-24.
The Patriots will travel to Boulder City, Nevada on Mar. 3-5 for the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
