EDMOND, OKLA. – Junior
Seth Campbell claimed his second individual title of the season and UT Tyler leaped five spots up the team leaderboard to finish second at the Oak Tree Invitational on Tuesday.
The Patriots closed the event with the low team score of the final round at Oak Tree Country Club, firing a 292 to overtake some of the South Central Region's top programs for a second-place finish. Campbell was the only individual to break par in the final round, carding a two-under round of 68 on Tuesday to finish the tournament with an even par 210 (69-73-68) total.
Campbell's four-stroke individual victory at the Oak Tree Invitational is his second individual title of the year after winning the DBU Classic back on Oct. 23-24.
The 292 on Tuesday for UT Tyler pushed the Patriots five spots up the team leaderboard into second place with an 894 (300-302-292) three-round total. The finish earned a head-to-head victory for UT Tyler over no. 4 nationally-ranked Oklahoma Christian and no. 13 nationally-ranked Midwestern State, who entered the week ranked second and fourth in the latest NCAA DII South Central Regional rankings powered by Clipd.
The Patriots also knocked off no. 14 Henderson State, no. 17 UT Permian Basin and no. 23 to make it five victories over team's ranked within the NCAA DII National Top 25.
Campbell made four birdies and two bogeys to card a final round 68, effectively cruising to a four-shot victory over the field with rounds of 69-73-68. He bogeyed two out of his first three holes on Tuesday before playing the next 15 holes at four-under par.
Junior
Carson Wray carded a 74 and classmates
Jackson Naeger and
Jay Shero rounds of 75 to round out the four counting scores for the Patriots on Tuesday. UT Tyler's 292 was the best score of the round by six shots and was the second lowest team total posted in the tournament.
Oak Tree Country Club proved to be a stern test for a great field of Division II golf on Monday and Tuesday, surrendering a scoring average of 78.44 for the tournament.
Naeger claimed a tie for 14
th place finish on the individual leaderboard with a 224 (71-78-75) three-round total. The junior was instrumental in the Patriot's leap to second place on the team leaderboard Tuesday afternoon as he birdied each of his last three holes following a string of five bogeys to begin his final round.
Wray also closed strong in the final round for UT Tyler, birding two out of his last five holes on the day. Wray finished in a tie for 40
th place at 231 with rounds of 79-78-74.
Shero posted a second straight round of 75 to finish the event in 47
th place with a 232 (82-75-75), while senior
Carter Lewis rounded out the Patriot contributors with rounds of 81-76-77 for a 234 total.
UT Tyler will return to the course next week at the Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas at Wichita Falls Country Club.
