RICHARDSON, TEXAS – UT Tyler women's basketball freshman
Hayley Cumming has been named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season as announced Monday.
She is the third Patriots player to win a weekly award this season, joining teammates
Mileina Sablinskaite and
Leila Davis.
Cumming, a Mont Albert, Australia native, was instrumental in the Patriots two wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International to close out the regular season.
Against the Javelinas, she scored 19 points to lead the team on offense. On defense, she grabbed four rebounds, two blocks, and three steals as she helped the Patriots hold Texas A&M-Kingsville to 39.1% from the field and force them into 23 turnovers.
Against the Dustdevils, Cumming was nothing short of spectacular. She scored nine points in the contest, but her main contributions came on defense. There, she recorded three rebounds and a steal, while also posting a new program record of seven blocks in a single game. Of those seven blocks, five came in the fourth quarter, and it's the second highest total in a single game this season in the LSC.
Cumming and the Patriots will set their sights on the Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Tournament this weekend. They are the No. 3 seed, and will face off with No. 6 seed Angelo State on Friday at 12 p.m.
