Whataburger Regional Preview: Women’s Golf

The Patriots are back in the NCAA Tournament to take on the West Regional with eyes on the national championship tournament.

THE LSC TOURNAMENT

UT Tyler put together a spirited run in the LSC Tournament, qualifying for medal match play for the first time as a program on their way to a share of third place.

Senior Martha Laremark bludgeoned the golf course for three rounds in the individual portion, finishing as runner up on the leaderboard and earning All-Tournament Team honors.

That run helped the Patriots finish second as a team, earning the #2 seed in medal match play. There they took on #3 seed West Texas A&M, but came up just one point short to share third place.

HIGH RANKINGS

The Patriots following that LSC performance are ranked #8 as a team in the latest Scoreboard Rankings, now posting a record of 126-19-2 for the year.

They are led by senior Laremark, who is #20 in the latest national rankings and #5 in the region. Arnie Taguines is just behind at #39 and #9 in the region, and both Lucy Kate Smith and Karina Duran are ranked #53 and #57 nationally.

THE NCAA WEST REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

The West Regional Tournament will be hosted by CSU Pueblo at Pueblo Country Club. The club was founded in 1903 and will play as a par 71 and a distance of 5,923 yards.

The top five teams and top two individuals not on those teams at the end of 54 holes of stroke play will advance into the NCAA Championship on May 12-16 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Patriots head into the tournament as the #2 seed and will be making their second straight appearance in the regional tournament and third in the Division II era.

The tournament was originally scheduled for three 18 hole rounds over three days, but with anticipated cold weather moving in on Wednesday, the tournament has now been condensed into two days. Monday will feature a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. mountain time and the teams will play 36 holes. Teams will be repaired on Tuesday and will have tee times.
